The very concept of a ‘plate’ is so simple that it’s often used to describe a wide range of things from geological formations to metal strips on automobiles.

We are, of course, talking about the dinner plate, which Oxford Dictionary defines as “a flat dish, typically circular and made of china, from which food is eaten or served.” They are also frequently used decoratively, with anything from simple geometric patterns to vivid illustrations or commemorative scenes.

Context and purpose with plates is everything. It’s the difference between a melamine dinnerplate and a Bing & Grøndahl display. Some plates are meant only for display, while others only for eating and serving food, while still others serve both purposes. There are many types of plates based on their shapes, functions, or looks, but overall, they all can lend significant aesthetic weight to a room when used and displayed properly.

History of Decorative and Collectible Plates

Decorative plates have existed in various forms for thousands of years, appearing as far afield as ancient Egypt, Greece, Persia, and China. As long as there have existed decorative plates, so too have there been collections. The popularity of decorative plates gradually popped up and spread all over the world to places like Arabia, the Americas, and Northern Europe, to materials such as porcelain and earthenware, and to styles such as faience and delftware.

Collectable commemorative plates began to become popular in the 1800’s thanks to the work of Patrick Palmer-Thomas, who began painting ornamental plates to celebrate picturesque locations and commemorate events. The advent of limited-edition commemorative plates was thanks to Bing & Grøndahl’s 1895 ‘Behind the Frozen Window’ Christmas plate. From there, popularity of limited-edition collector’s plates exploded in the early 20th
century, and although perhaps not as widespread today, they’re still going strong.

How to Display Plates

For aspiring plate collectors, there’s many reasons to begin collecting plates, ranging from preservation of a small piece of history, to enhancement of a room’s presentation. Perhaps you found some delft blue plates in a flea market, or perhaps you’re displaying Grandma’s favorite Christmas plate. The same basic ideas of how best to display them apply to all. Decorative plates are by their very nature meant to be an aesthetic enhancement to where they’re displayed; they are designed to look nice. For the plate collector or interior designer, this is great news!

Art Display Essentials carries a wide variety of all of mount types, which can be found within the Plate and Bowl Stands category on this website. When displaying decorative plates and selecting the proper mounts, there’s several decisions to be made that govern what is used. Firstly, where to display the plates. In the most general of terms, this equates to a decision between wall mounting and table mounting. For wall mounting, options include spring-loaded hangers
and several styles of adjustable-bodied mounts. For table mounting, there are a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and styles available, catering to individual plates, platters, full dinnerware sets, and similar objects such as bowls, cups, and spoons.

There’s no shortage of shelving options available across the internet, but there is a significant creative bottleneck that underlies the overall selection. In this post, I'll discuss what this creative bottleneck is, and present an effective display solution which overcomes this and truly breaks free from the invisible trend that almost all shelving ultimately follows.

The Inconspicuous Uniformity of Shelving

A Google search of ‘Aesthetic Shelving’ reveals a variety of results which, while certainly aesthetic, are all largely cut from the same proverbial cloth. The majority can be described as having striking shapes that are made with natural finishes. Individually they are certainly interesting, but overall, there is little variety among them overall within extends beyond this framework.

A slightly different search query of ‘Unique Shelving’ results in some genuinely unique shelving, albeit significantly expensive custom pieces that oftentimes have limited functionality brought on by the ambitious design choices that went into their construction. They, again, are generally more similar than not.

What all of these have almost invariably in common is that they are made with a seeming 2-dimensional level of depth that is, on one extreme, the simple combination of a few vertical and horizontal components, and on the other, the total rejection of this simple structure in favor of something overly elaborate that is more a statement than a functional display fixture. They’re all made with a certain range of aesthetics in mind and can overly restrict your creativity if that aesthetic is not the look you’re going for.

Unique Expression, the Wall Wedge, and You

An aesthetic interior made in your own unique way is a perfect way to express yourself, be it in a gallery, an office, or even a home. The first step of making something unique is to have unique ideas, the actualization of which is greatly assisted by having creative building blocks with which to put those ideas into motion.

This brings us to the Wall Wedge: an aesthetic, sturdy, affordable, and easily customizable shelving solution. These American-made shelves are unique in that they are triangular in shape – they actually
break out from the 2D dichotomy of overly simple vs. overly elaborate shelving, and they do so while looking completely different from the other available conventional shelving options. Their shape gives them both significant depth and stability.

Wall wedges are commonly used in art galleries and museums – that’s no accident. These are institutions that collectively know a great deal about aesthetics. The muted white finishes our Wall Wedges are hand-made with are perfect for authoritative displays and are also a convenient blank canvas should you decide to pant them another color or even fully customize them with artistic designs.

The aesthetic possibilities are endless with Wall Wedges, and the sky is the limit. To purchase or read more specific information on them, the Wall Wedges page can be found here.
http://www.artdisplay.com/blog/Display-Armatures-What-are-they-and-when-should-they-be-usedDisplay Armatures: What are they, and when should they be used? What is an armature?
In the most general of terms, an armature is a framework on which some other material is formed around or supported by. Armatures come in all shapes and sizes and have been used for the creation of works of art ranging from small-scale clay sculptures all the way up to the Statue of Liberty.

What about a display armature?

Existing just outside of this narrow definition is what we at Art Display Essentials call a display armature. A display armature is certainly an armature as it forms a framework with which to hold something else, but it has a different purpose. Instead of supporting artwork internally, a display armature supports artwork externally. It is easily shaped, reshaped, adjusted, molded, etc. Display armatures represent a customizable wireframe that supports completed artistic objects, whether they are unable to stand on their own or not.

When should a display armature be used?

Display armatures should be used when you have an object you want mounted or physically elevated. It’s all in the name; display armatures
are perfect for display. Anyone can display art with display armatures, not just museums and galleries. Display armatures have an endless array of potential use cases, ranging from artistic items as diverse as dolls, rocks, and guns, to canes, seashells, and oil lamps. They are the single most customizable type of display equipment there is, being shapable, bendable, and cuttable with only a few tools (if not no tools at all).

In short: display armatures are sturdy wire display stands designed to support and elevate small artistic objects for an improved viewing experience.
